The past year shows a clear decline in health insurance coverage for Americans, according to a study by the Employee Benefit Research Institute (EBRI). In spite of gains in prior years, the current figures look grim.

The non-profit research organization just recently released the report which shows that the number of people covered with an employer-sponsored health insurance plan will most likely drop this year.The number of Americans with an employer’s coverage has decreased since 2000, but that was matched with an increase in the number of people who found coverage in the individual health insurance market.

Americans were buying their own health insurance plans more and more frequently this past year, according to a report by the Kansas City Star. They state that the past year’s economy combined with lower unemployment rates, contributed to the ability of more workers to purchase their own plans.

With today’s economic situation becoming more dire by the day, unemployment is rising. And the ability of workers to purchase their own health care coverage is clearly waning.

With more mortgage failures each day, and food and gas prices through the roof, family budgets are being strained and stretched to their limits. It is no surprise that health care is one of the first things to be cut.

The Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) is written as a protection for the consumer and not the credit reporting agencies. Please see www.ftc.gov/s/statutes/fcradoc.pdf for details of this important act.

The FCRA explains what we can see from the credit reporting agencies and our rights. We have a right to view the financial history which the credit bureaus have for us. Remember that these agencies are interested in money and are “for profit.”

Your credit reports will contain alot of information about your financial history. While much of the information is probably accurate, while some may be a surprise to you. In fact, the reports may have completely false or information that should have been removed.

According to the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) tells us that we can fix any problems with our credit reports ourselves without any help from a possibly disreputable company. According to the FCRA, the only “negative information” that can remain on your credit report is “negative information” that can be proven to be true.

Get your credit reports, compare, mark any entries that you believe are false. If it’s negative and true, it has to stay. Then you will make your case for why information is false.

Document all data available to demonstrate that an entry is false and this is proof of an erroneous entry. You will send this to the credit bureaus. They must respond and it is their responsibility to prove all the information is true.

Only you can decide if you will be able to carry out this process on your own behalf. If not, you may consider “Credit Counseling.” This also needs to be done very carefully. Avoid those agencies that promise to change your credit almost overnight. It’s probably too good to be true. In addition, you may be asked to pay an “upfront” fee and monthly fee. These are also agencies that need to make money. They could be SCAMS.

There are some honest firms and individuals who will legitimately help. Try finding referrals from others to help you find reputable help who will handle your needs in a timely fashion.

Let’s say you live in a place where it snows for three weeks solid - and you end up with six feet of snow piled up on your roof. It may not be long until your roof either collapses or gets seriously damaged by the snow. Expensive repairs require cash, and in the absence of cash you may end up needing a speedy $5,000 loan.

What other choice might you have - keeping a damaged roof and going through the whole winter freezing and wet? But if you don’t have the necessary money for getting the roof back in order, a quick loan could be the only way you’ll be warm and dry this January.

Here’s another possible scenario - it might already be late January and you’re in charge of your local Super Bowl party. Airline tickets on such short notice are going to cost a fortune - the total could add up to thousands of dollars. Maybe you have the money in an emergency fund, but maybe you don’t. The only answer might be a signature loan.

Going into debt is never the ideal scenario - and these three situations are totally undesirable. I’m especially unenthused about you going deep into debt for a massive television you only need for a three hour party.

At the end of the day you might have to take a little borrowed money from a bank, and you ought to be well educated about the different types of signature loans available to you. Manage your money well and you’ll be out of debt almost as fast as you got into it.
